FAQ on Polish And Wax Part 2

There is a lot of confusion about the difference between a polish, and a wax. Many companies are marketing waxes and paint protectants as polishes and glazes and the terms have become almost interchangeable.

Professionals know there is a big difference.

Meguiar’s is a true polish manufacture. That is, unlike many of our competitors that can only offer you a few products for cars with cured paint, Meguiar’s product range runs from the highest quality finishing papers in the industry, to state-of-the-art pure synthetic paint protectants, to everything in-between.

Example: Most companies only offer the following products:

Car wash

Pre-wax cleaner

One or two waxes (usually some type of natural wax or polymer/silicone synthetic protectant)

Multi-surface vinyl protectant

And sometimes one or more of the following:

Some type of wheel cleaner, leather treatment, or tire dressing.

Because they offer such a limited selection, and often times don’t even manufacture the products themselves, they really have no expertise when it comes to formulating complex products that professionals require as an intricate part of performing their job duties as skilled craftsman. This is why frequently you will see a product whose purpose is to protect the paint labeled as a polish.

Instead of merely defining the difference between a polish and a wax, below you will find the Meguiar’s 5-Step Paint Care Cycle and the products and procedures for each of the 5 steps.

The 5-step paint care cycle outlines the 5 basic but important procedures and the accompanying products that enable you to restore and maintain a show car shine on your car’s finish.

Below are the 5 categories of products including pure polishes and cleaner/polishes as they are placed in the 5-step paint care cycle.

The 5-Step Paint Care Cycle includes:

Step 1

Washing

Product

Procedure

Wash Solutions

Washing

Washing removes loose surface dirt and loose contaminants that have not yet bonded to the surface. All Meguiar’s wash products are specially formulated to clean well without stripping wax protection or dulling and drying out all paint types. All Meguiar’s washes also contain special conditioning agents that leave behind a slick, high gloss surface.

Because most people wash their car more than any other procedure, it’s important to use a car wash solution that is specifically formulated for the unique chemistry used to make modern clear coats. Above all, avoid using common dishwashing detergents because these products are extremely harsh and tend to dull the finish down with each use. Dish soaps are also hard on other materials and components such as rubber, vinyl and plastics, remember, when you wash your car with dish soap everything is subjected to the dulling and drying effects high alkaline soaps cause to your vehicle.

Step 2

Cleaning or

Surface Prep

Product

Procedure

Paint cleaners

Removing below surface defects

Clay bars

Removing above surface contaminants

Surface Prep includes both paint cleaning (not to be confused with the washing step), and claying the finish (with a clay bar). To help you accomplish these two steps, Meguiar’s offers a number of safe but effective paint cleaners and an easy to use clay bar kit that includes everything you need to clay your car’s finish.

Paint Cleaners

This includes highly specialized Compounds and Paint Cleaners, which utilize both microscopic and macroscopic diminishing abrasives™ technology. Meguiar’s has pioneered and led the industry in diminishing abrasive technology since 1901. Over the course of these many years, Meguiar’s has developed more formulas than any other company for performing the delicate procedure of removing a defect in the paint, while at the same time, removing as little paint as humanly possible during the process.

Meguiar’s diminishing abrasive technology is one of Meguiar’s most guarded secrets that is so highly sought after by our competitors and which completely separates us from the rest of the competition when you look at the results with your own two eyes. Our abrasive products, correctly used, leave the surface looking as though it were just polished, not as though it were just scoured with a compounded.

Out of all the procedures in the 5-step paint care cycle, cleaning is the most important procedure because the results from your cleaning step will determine the end result for the polishing and protecting steps.

“A surface won’t go clear until it comes clean”

It is vitally important that all bonded contaminants, surface imperfections, oxidation, pore-imbedding stains, and built-up road grime, etc. first be removed in order to bring the finish to it’s highest potential for clarity, gloss, depth and shine.

Applying a wax, whether it’s synthetic, natural or a blend of both, to a neglected surface that has not been properly cleaned and then polished, will merely act to seal or lock the contaminants to the finish, and will do nothing to improve, or remove the other defects and in most cases will only marginally improve gloss, shine and reflectivity.

Clay Bar Technology

Clay bar technology evolved as a natural reaction to the need that arose for a way to safely remove bonded contaminants from clear coat paints without resorting to traditional rubbing or polishing compounds and the resulting scratches caused by the sharp, hard abrasive typically used in these formulas.

In the old days, if you found overspray or any type of unwanted substance on the hood, roof or deck lid of your car that washing didn’t remove, you could simply go to the garage and grab any old compound, and together with a rag, you could quickly remove the offending contaminants. After that you could simply apply just about any companies wax and presto-chango, the problem was gone.

Not so simple anymore.

If your were to perform that same procedure to a modern clear coat today, you would see a horrible looking scratched-up mess everywhere you applied the compound, and the wax would do nothing to cover the scratches up.

Enter the Clay bar

Clay bars are non-abrasive bars of synthetic clay called polyclay. They are somewhat like a high-tech version of Play-Doh®. They work in three easy steps:

1. First, you mold the clay bar into a pancake-looking flat wafer
2. Second, you lubricate the finish with a spray lubricant like Meguiar’s Quik Detailer
3. Third, you then rub the clay bar back and forth across the paint (somewhat like a bar of soap against your arm)

That’s it! You are now claying your car’s finish. As you’re doing this, the clay bar will grab onto, lift, and pullout the contaminants that have bonded to the surface of your finish.

Generally speaking for most cars, only the horizontal surfaces need to be clayed, as it is the horizontal surfaces that contaminants tend to land on and if not removed within a reasonable period of time will then bond tightly to the surface. For extremely neglected vehicles, you can always evaluate the vertical surfaces and if need be, clay them too.

One important thing to keep in mind, if a vehicle’s finish has bonded contaminants, it is highly likely that it also has below surface defects, for example, pore-imbedding stains. For this reason, Meguiar’s recommends for best possible results, always use a paint cleaner after claying to insure the finish is clean both on top of the surface as well as below the surface.

Step 3

Polishing

Product

Procedure

Cleaner/Polish

Pure Polishes

Removing swirls and light scratches

Creating brilliant shine and gloss

Meguiar’s offers two types of polishes, Cleaner Polishes and Pure Polishes. Cleaner Polishes are for removing very light or fine defects while restoring a crystal clear, smooth high gloss surface. Pure polishes are for finishes already in excellent condition and are for the purpose or creating brilliant high gloss with deep dark reflections.

If you look in Webster’s Dictionary under the word polish, one of the definitions they include reads like this:

“A preparation that is used to produce gloss, and often color for the protection and decoration of a surface.”

This definition best describes Meguiar’s Pure Polishes. Meguiar’s pure polishes are designed to create brilliant high gloss while preparing the surface for the application of a protective coating.

Meguiar’s pure polishes accomplish this without the use of abrasives.

Another definition found in Webster’s Dictionary for polish is,

“To make smooth and glossy by friction.”

This definition best describes Meguiar’s Cleaner/Polishes. Meguiar’s cleaner polishes are formulated to very gently abrade the surface with Meguiar’s Diminishing AbrasiveTM and Buffered AbrasiveTM technology to remove the finest defects and create a perfectly smooth, high gloss finish.

Depending on what type of paint you’re working on, traditional paints like lacquers and enamels, or catalyzed clear coats, Meguiar’s has the products specifically designed to work on both types of paints, not to mention many other surfaces such as plastics and polyester resins (Fiberglas Gel-coats).

Meguiar’s Trade Secret Polishing Oils

The trade secret oils Meguiar’s uses in both types of polishes are unique to the industry and to this day have never been surpassed for creating deep, dark reflections and brilliant high gloss by any of our competitors in over 100 years.

The oils Meguiar’s uses are also important in maintaining the original condition of the paint by filling in the naturally occurring microscopic pores and surface imperfections thus preventing detrimental substances and elements as simple as water, or worse, acid-rain, from entering into these pores and microscopic surface imperfections thus causing oxidation and chemical etching. These oils act to replace the original resins as they wear away through natural processes.

When paint is new, it is the most impermeable it will ever be, this means it is a very smooth non-porous, continuous film. With age, exposure to the environment and micro-scratching caused by day-in, day-out wear and tear, your paint develops micro-fissures in the surface along with other defects. These micro-fissures and other defects act to make the continuous film or coating of paint more porous. As this happens, your car’s finish becomes more vulnerable to corrosive elements that will attack and degrade your finish.

Remember, waxes, synthetic or otherwise, are meant to be Sacrificial Barriers with the intended purpose sealing the surface, while blocking those things that would attack your paint, from coming into direct contact with the paint. Waxes protect your finish by sacrificing themselves so that your paint doesn’t have to.

An analogy is your skin. In the same way you can clean, polish and protect your skin, you can clean, polish and protect your car’s finish. Soap can be used to clean your skin and remove dirt from the pores. Skin lotions can be used to moisturize your skin, conditioning it and making it more clear and beautiful. Protection products like lotions used to protect hands from exposure to chemicals and UV protectants can be applied to help protect your skin from the things that would attack your skin if these harmful things could come into direct contact with your skin.

While human skin and automotive paint are very different, the analogy is very similar. With Meguiar’s, you can:

* Wash your car’s finish to remove unwanted and accumulated dirt contaminants
* Clean your paint with our special paint cleaners and cleaner/polishes
* Polish your paint with our pure polishes to create unequaled beauty
* Protect your paint with our advanced paint protection products
* Maintain your car’s finish using our fast and easy to use maintenance products

The unique thing about Meguiar’s highly specialized trade secret oils is their ability to restore and maintain the Optical Clarity of both single stage and clear coat paints in a way that polymers alone cannot match, the results of which are demonstrated in side-by-side comparison demonstrate.

Step 4

Protecting

Product

Procedure

Waxes

Paint Protectants

Waxing/Protecting

Paint protection products (waxes by any other name), whether they are based on natural ingredients or synthetic ingredients (or a blend of both) provide a protective film, or Sacrificial Barrier (as mentioned above) against Mother Nature and other detrimental or corrosive substances. Without this sacrificial barrier, your finish is susceptible to attack at any time, as harmful or corrosive substances come into direct contact with the surface.

This brings up the topic of Water Beading. While most people use the visual indicator of water beading on the surface to mean their finish is protected… it is actually only an indicator of High Surface Tension.

High Surface Tension does not automatically mean the coating that has been applied is actually providing any real or meaningful protective characteristics.

Meguiar’s R & D department has decades of expertise in creating the most advanced polymer-based formula’s made from state-of-the-art engineered synthetic polymers, which are able to evenly cross-link very tightly to the surface and offer real protection on a multitude of surfaces against a multitude of attacks. Our products can also achieve optimal cross-linking within 15 to 20 minutes after application allowing the excess product to be removed shortly thereafter.

Some of Meguiar’s Polymer-Based waxes include:

* NXT Generation Tech Wax® 2.0
* Meguiar’s Gold Class Wax
* Meguiar’s Cleaner/Wax
* Meguiar’s Polymer Sealant
* Meguiar’s Flagship Premium Marine Wax

Even our Spray Waxes contain high performance, engineered synthetic polymers, as do some of our Car Wash products.

Besides acting as sacrificial barriers to protect the underlying surface, a premium wax can also increase the visual appearance of a finish. Many of Meguiar’s waxes will not only provide better protection than the competition, but will also:

* Increase optical clarity and distinction of image (D.O.I.)
* Enhance and increase the reflective characteristics of medium to dark color finishes
* Add shine and slickness
* Create wet-looking gloss
* Fill-in and hide swirls and scratches
* Provide the most UV protection available
* Offer water sheeting action, or water beading action (depending on the wax)

Choosing the right wax for your finish and your unique circumstances is something our Surface Care Experts would love to help you determine. Just call our Customer Care Hotline and talk to a knowledgeable technician to help you make the right choice.

Step 5

Maintaining

Product

Procedure

Quick Detailers

Spray Waxes

Maintaining finishes in excellent condition between regular washing, cleaning, polishing and protecting

Maintenance products, like our Quik Detailer, and our Quik Wax, allow you quickly clean your car and restore that just waxed look in just a matter of minutes… practically anywhere.

Meguiar’s Quik Detailer removes fresh contaminants before they have a chance to bond or etch into the surface.

Meguiar’s Quik Wax quickly and easily boosts your already existing wax protection while turning your finish dramatically darker and increasing shine and gloss.

In addition there’s also NXT Generation™ Spray Wax to create a deep, dark, wet-look shine.

Meguiar’s actually invented the concept of a mist and wipe product back in the early-80’s with the introduction of their mist & wipe product called “Trigger Wash

As leaders and experts in the surface care industry, we have a history of creating new products, such as mist & wipe products like our Quik Detailer and M-34 Final Inspection to help our customers maintain and beautify their vehicles.

In keeping with that history, we have just introduced a brand new spray wax that produces similar results as Meguiar’s Quik Wax. It’s actually a part of Meguiar’s NXT GenerationTM line of products based upon Meguiar’s ESP Technology (Engineered Synthetic Polymers) and is a companion product to Meguiar’s

NXT Generation™ Tech Wax it’s called NXT Generation™ Spray Wax.

Meguiar’s 5-Step Paint Care Cycle clearly demonstrates there are 5 basic steps to professional and intelligent car care.

Using the correct Meguiar’s products and the right technique, you can remove scratches and swirls that have accumulated from years of neglect to successfully restore a flawless, show car finish as demonstrated here on a 1991 BMW E34 M5. The left side is untouched, while the right side has been professionally restored using all Meguiar’s products.

The 5-Step Paint Care Cycle also enables you to understand exactly what a product is not just by the name on the label, but by the results the product accomplishes according to the 5 different groups of procedures outlined in the 5-Step Paint Care Cycle.

If a product is labeled a polish, but in fact is used to protect, then you know it’s a wax or a paint protectant and not an actual polish in the true sense of the definition of the word. The inability of a company to correctly label their products should be a clear warning that calls into skepticism any of their claims, not to mention the quality of their products as well as their credibility.

Here at Meguiar’s we manufacture some very complex products, of which polishes and waxes are only a small portion of our complete line.

How can I remove fresh stains, water spots, and smears on my car’s finish?

The best way to get rid of fresh stains, water spots and smears is to remove them as quickly as possible, before they have a chance to bake into the paint or cause permanent damage.

This is why Meguiar’s recommends keeping Meguiar’s Quik Detailer® or Ulimate Quik Detailer® or Final Inspection and a microfiber polishing cloth like Meguiar’s Supreme Shine Microfiber in the trunk or the back of your car, truck or S.U.V. Having immediate access to the right tools to remove fresh bird droppings and other unwanted contaminants at a moments notice can make the difference between an unsightly permanent stain or a show car shine.

If you have stubborn stains, spots or smears that a quick detailer will not remove, your next best bet is to wash your car and then use one of Meguiar’s paint cleaners like ScratchX or Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner to safely clean the surface and remove the offending contaminants.

Does Meguiar’s make a product that will fill-in and hide swirls and fine scratches in my car’s paint?

Yes. However, Meguiar’s has historically been known for creating the type of products that remove swirls and scratches, not merely fill them in. Most Meguiar’s waxes, paint protectants, spray waxes and pure polishes can be used to successfully fill in and hide fine scratches and swirls. However, the effect is only temporary and the scratches will reappear as the polish or wax wears off.

The best way to remove even fine scratches and swirls is to use a Meguiar’s paint cleaner like ScratchX or Deep Crystal Paint Cleaner to actually level the finish and thus remove the scratch.

Two products specifically formulated to bring ease and effectiveness to eliminating those difficult to remove swirls, holograms and cobweb scratches are:

* NXT GenerationTM Tech Wax 2.0 - NXT is unique among synthetic waxes on the market in that it actually accomplishes what others claim their product will do, but in reality don’t even come close. One or two thin coats of NXT Tech Wax will eliminate a majority of fine swirls and cobweb scratches. The results are finishes that have a deep, wet-look shine. NOTE: For severe swirls, we recommend pre-cleaning the surface with a Meguiar’s paint cleaner.

* NXT GenerationTM Spray Wax specially formulated to build on the results created by NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0. NXT Spray Wax will boost the look and feel of your finish to give it that just waxed appearance. You will be so impressed at how well it works that after you have tried this combination you will never use anything else!

The trade secret oils used in all Meguiar’s polishes are very important not only for enhancing gloss, depth and overall beauty, but also for maintaining the longevity of your paint by replenishing the resins that all paints are made with but which breakdown and deteriorate over time through a number of different methods:

* Lost over time as a normal function of breaking down (Law of Entropy)
* Leached out through frequent exposure to inclement weather and washing with detergent soaps
* Baked and evaporated out when exposed to extended direct sunlight and high temperatures
* Leached out when repeatedly exposed to harsh solvents used in poor quality car care products
* Abraded, scratched and scoured by mechanical abrasives that do not breakdown

Meguiar’s pure polishes will dramatically help to reduce the optical refraction that makes scratches so much more noticeable in today’s modern clear coats. Meguiar’s pure polishes include:

* Deep Crystal System, Step-2 Polish, (A2116)
* Show Car Glaze, (M0716)

Of these two, Show Car Glaze is extremely popular for traditional non-clear coat paints such as lacquers and enamels, while Deep Crystal Step-2 Polish is a popular and easy to use pure polish for modern clear coats.

Does Meguiar’s make a product that will fill-in and hide deep scratches in my car’s paint?

No. Deep scratches cannot be filled in and in some cases cannot be removed. If you drag your fingernail over a scratch and it gets caught, or slides into the scratch, then this scratch is to deep to hide and probably too deep to completely remove.

Meguiar’s believes the best way to approach surface defects like scratches is to remove them, not fill them in. In the case of deeper scratches - for example someone keys your car while it’s parked in a parking lot - then sometimes you are better off improving the scratch, not attempting to completely remove the scratch.

Removing a deep scratch could mean causing more harm than good if you go through the clear and expose the base coat, or in the case of a single-stage paint, exposing the primer under the color coat, which can then only be repaired by repainting the affected area.

For scratches like these you can often use a Meguiar’s paint cleaner to improve the scratch in such a way that is difficult to see unless you know exactly where to look. Often times this is more acceptable than paying to have the panel or section of your vehicle repainted.

How soon can I wax my new car?

A new car with a factory paint job can be waxed the moment it is rolled out of the manufacturing plant. Cars that have factory paint jobs are cured at much higher temperatures, sometimes as high as 300 degrees in special baking ovens. At a factory level, the car goes through the painting and baking process without any of the rubber, plastic, and cloth components installed. This is why they can expose the car and it’s fresh paint to such high temperatures. These high temperatures and special paints used at the factory level insures the paint is fully cured by the time the car is completely assembled.

After-market paint finishes however, are cured at a much lower temperature to ensure the method of baking or heating the paint doesn’t melt non-metal components such as wiring and vinyl. For this reason, it’s best to follow the specific paint manufactures recommendations for care and maintenance of fresh paint. Most paint manufactures that supply paint to the refinish industry recommend that you allow anywhere from 30 to 90 days curing time after the paint is applied before you apply the first application of wax.

To maintain your cars fresh paint during the recommended curing time you can safely use any of the below Meguiar’s pure polishes, which are not only safe for fresh paint but help to enhance the curing process while making your paint look it’s absolute best.

M-03 Machine Glaze

M-05 New Car Glaze

M-07 Show Car Glaze

M-81 Hand Polish

A-21 Deep Crystal Polish

Another product you can use to maintain fresh paint throughout the curing process and even afterwards is Meguiar’s M-80 Speed Glaze. Speed Glaze is a cleaner/polish that also contains a unique paintable polymer that will extend the durability of the product while offering protection to the finish closer to that of a real wax or paint protectant. Speed Glaze contains a high level of pure polishing oils and only a small amount of very fine diminishing abrasives for cleaning/removing surface imperfections, blemishes, and surface stain.

The amount of diminishing abrasives contained in this product are not enough to scratch the surface when applied by hand or machine. They will instead ensure that the surface is completely clean, enabling the rich polishing oils to penetrate into the surface creating deep, dark, wet-looking gloss while the paintable polymers provide a small but important level of protection to preserve your finish from attack and deterioration while it cures.

How do I remove the rough feeling from my paint?

Many environmental contaminants adhere to your paint so strongly, that even a high-quality car wash cannot remove them. Some may be visible to your eye. Others you’ll detect when you pass your hand across the finish after washing and notice it doesn’t feel as smooth as glass.

All of these contaminants can reduce your shine and ultimately do permanent damage to your paint. A safe, non-abrasive clay bar and high lubricity quick detailer like those found in Meguiar’s Smooth Surface™ Clay Kit. Removing above surface contaminants and restoring a smooth surface to your paint finish is easily accomplished with Meguiar’s® Smooth Surface Clay Kit. (Never use sharp, abrasive rubbing and polishing compounds that will scratch your car’s finish.)

How can I remove below surface defects like chemical etching, swirls, and scratches?

Chances are good that if your car’s finish needs to be clayed (the removal of above surface bonded contaminants), then it also needs a thorough paint cleaning. Paint cleaning, using a paint cleaner (not to be confused with the washing procedure and a car wash solution) is where you clean and remove below surface defects such as pore-imbedding stains, oxidation, scratches and swirls, road grime and other unsightly blemishes. By cleaning the paint after claying the paint, you will restore the optical clarity of a clear coat finish so that the underlying color coat can shine through. In the case of a non-clear coat finish, a good cleaning will bring out the full color spectrum and richness of the color coat.

Meguiar’s Paint Cleaners that are safe for use by hand on clear coat paints include:

* Deep Crystal System Paint Cleaner
* ScratchX
* M-09 Swirl Remover 2.0

Car Polish FAQ Part 1

How to prevent oxidation?

For the most part, oxidation can only take place when the surface of your car’s finish has deteriorated from abuse or neglect to the point where the once impermeable surface has become permeable and then left unprotected. Deterioration is caused by, neglect, washing with detergent washes (dish soap), the leaching and drying-out effect due to repeated exposure to inclement weather, baking in hot sun, natural wear and tear, and through the natural process of breaking down. (Law of Entropy)

The best way to prevent oxidation is to,

Always wash your vehicles finish using a non-detergent, premium car wash specifically formulated for automotive finishes.

Add a protective coating of wax, (natural, synthetic, or blended) to your finish a minimum of 3-4 times a year. The most important thing you can do to prevent oxidation besides washing is to protect the paint you presently have with a protective coating. A good protective coating will act as a barrier-film that will prevent moisture from coming into direct contact with your paint.

Remove pore-imbedding stains (contaminants in the paint) by using a premium paint cleaner or cleaner polish at least once a year and more often if needed.

Whenever possible, park under cover.

Use a car cover to shield against airborne contamination and UV rays

Should I Prep My Paint Before Waxing?

The way to determine whether or not your car’s finish needs any pre-wax prep work is to evaluate the surface, immediately after washing. A thorough surface evaluation will help you to determine whether or not you need to remove above surface defects such as bonded contaminants with a clay bar, or below surface defects such as swirls, scratches, oxidation and pore-imbedding stains.

Just because your paint has no major scratches or other obvious signs of damage doesn’t mean that your finish is as flawlessly smooth as when your car was show room new. There are many kinds of subtle surface defects that if not corrected, can prevent you from restoring that perfect gloss.

There are two primary kinds of surface defects to look for, Above Surface Contaminants, and Below Surface Defects.

How do I perform a Surface Evaluation?

You’ll want to inspect the surface both visually, as well as by physically using your sense of touch. Sometimes your sense of touch can reveal defects the eyes cannot see.

Above surface defects can safely be removed using one of Meguiar’s clay bars together with one of Meguiar’s spray lubricants like Quik Detailer, or Final Inspection.

First, wash and dry your vehicle. Then look along your paint surface at an angle while noting the depth and richness of the color.

Search for:

Swirl marks

Scratches

Etched areas

Fading

Dulling

Oxidation

Overspray

A photographer’s loupe or magnifying glass will make it even easier to identify any problem areas. Ideally, do this in bright sunlight as well as under strong indoor lights because some defects show up best under specific types of lighting conditions. To find bonded contaminants that your eyes may have missed, slowly slide the face of your clean, dry hand along the surface of your car’s finish after washing and drying your car. The surface should feel as smooth as glass.

Any surface irregularities you do feel are bonded contaminants that must be removed before polishing or waxing. The best way to remove above surface bonded contaminants is to use Meguiar’s Smooth Surface TM Clay Kit. The advanced polyclay technology used to make our clay bar together with the high lubrication characteristics of our Quik Detailer enables you to easily and safely remove even the most tenacious contaminants while gently protecting your paint from harm.

Read this interesting quote :

I believe the 4-star Euro NCAP crash test ratings is really a good selling point, for every where else except for the majority of Malaysians who are stubborn and ignorant..

Yeah, I’ve heard how MyVi fanatics bragged about their Daihatsu/Toyota counterparts scoring 4-star Euro NCAP crash test ratings, yet I still seen photos of MyVi turned turtle with both A- and B-pillar totally flatten (yeah, the MyVi looked like a slice of cheese cake you can get from Coffee Beans T&L :D). Guess where did the driver’s head goes?

BINGO! It made a hole on the tar road, being such ‘keras kepala’ he ‘was’.

Seeing that the i10’s crash test was done with the unit supplied by the Indian manufacturer, its result wouldn’t be far off from what we are getting here on our shore, unlike some manufacturers who uses ‘tin milo’ for your Viva’s body panel and … God forbids, the chassis itself.

To those who thinks that Savvy, being a 1.2 over i10’s 1.1 yet cheaper. Think again, you are compromising your life, whenever you are IN the car on the road, with 1-star less, it could make a different.

Alrighty, I started to sound like an advocate for accidents. I’ll go for the test drive tomorrow, woohoo!!

And someone reply the comment :

I cant understand the obsession with the ncap ratings.. ncap is just one of many crash ratings in the world. they are by no means an industry benchmark. a car with a 5 start ncap may not necesarilly do well in a US crash test(which is even more stringent) for example, because they all have different measurements, and criteria.

But the end of the day, would you still buy a hyundai just because its got ncap 4 star rating? There are many more criteria to look at.. would you totally ignore the possibility of poor 2nd hand price, suspect reliability and expensive spare parts?

look at the peuqeots and renaults, they all have 5 star ratings and they’re still not selling.

also.. dont forget, the european spec car probably has side airbags as well, which contributes to the 4 star rating. does the malaysian model have side airbags?

Comment again by someone :

___

brader, inokom spareparts are not expensive lar… unless u compare with a motorbike la.

i drive a hyundai getz for 2 years already…replacement parts i mostly use inokom (local) parts since they are compatible with the korean parts. on average parts are about 10-15% more expensive than perodua. but then again i already save easily 30% more fuel than fuel guzzling myvi.

test drove the i10 already,

pros:

-overall good build quality especially the centre console looks luxurious compared to myvi’s third world quality centre console and cd player.
i really like the centre console especially the big display and lighting at night.

-pick up is not bad for 66hp…easily on par with myvi 1.3A. No kidding.Test drive yourself. Only at speeds above 100kmh then really hard to go any faster.

- auto box gearchange is smooth and not jerky

-good fuel consumption (claimed) yet to be tested.

cons:
-interior is small compared to myvi…more comparable to viva.

-no tachometer, no mileage calculator

-engine abit loud when revving.

-door is quite light and not solid …more like p2 cars.

Conclusion: good alternative to the boring endless sea of myvis and vivas out there.

The branch manager told me the first 100 or so units are CBU india. thereafter sime darby plans to make it CKD. So that explains why the 2 badges. They do not want to come out with different specs and the need to revise pricing again.

And this is the story about the new and recently launched Hyundai I10:

Hyundai Sime-Darby Motor has launched the new Hyundai i10 5-door hatchback in Malaysia. The i10 replaces the Atos in the Hyundai global line-up but in certain countries like India, both the Atos (Santro) and the i10 is offered, with the latter being the more premium product. In fact, the i10 we get here comes from India where both the Atos and i10 are very very popular products, instead of Korea.

All the basics that will make the new Hyundai a popular runabout are there: a small luggage space extendable via the foldable rear seats and a 4-speed automatic. It chugs along via a 1.1 liter Epsilon family engine (sadly not the new Kappa 1.2 liter) putting out 65.8 horsepower at 5,500rpm and 99.1Nm of torque at a lower than usual 2,800rpm which should allow it to feel pretty zippy around town.

Safety features include a 4-star Euro NCAP body, dual SRS airbags and anti-lock brakes. In-car entertainment is an integrated 2-DIN audio CD player with MP3 and aux input support. The interior is rather monotonous and basic with endless fields of grey but there is a slight touch of “high-end” thanks to the dash-mounted shift lever instead of it being in the conventional position between the two front seats.

So you have decent safety specs, an acceptable level of in-car entertainment, an automatic gearbox, an engine that puts out peak torque at a low-mid RPM, and a price under RM50k. This should theoretically be very popular with city dwellers, especially since its claimed to have a 17.2km per liter combined fuel economy. It’s also got nice styling, being the first Hyundai car in Malaysia with the new naming scheme and design language that debuted with the i30. But Malaysians are just too brand conscious.

The 4-speed auto model retails for RM48,888 OTR with insurance and comes with a 5-year (300,000km) warranty. It is available in five colors: alpine blue, blushing red, stone black, sleek silver and champagne gold. A 5-speed manual version (that is claimed to get 20km per liter) is also available but strangely Hyundai’s press kit does not mention its price. This story will be updated later when the price is available.

The badging on the car is a little confusing but somehow expected. It has a combination of both Inokom and Hyundai logos and badges around the car.

See the picture of Hyundai I10 and what you will say?
